Constitution & Rules

I     Title

• The society shall be called "The Kirkcaldy Choral Union".

II    Object

• The object of the society will be the practice of music, particularly high-quality choral music, with the view of creating, cultivating and diffusing a taste for classical compositions.

III   Membership

• The membership of the society will be made up of two classes; (first) Ordinary Members, being those who take part in the practices and concerts; (second) Honorary Members, being those individuals, not necessarily members of the society, who, in the opinion of a quorum of Ordinary Members, have provided outstanding service to the society, and in recognition of which are appointed Honorary Members.
  
  
• No individual shall be excluded from membership of Kirkcaldy Choral Union, or debarred from any official capacity on the Committee, on the grounds of sex, race, colour, religion, sexual orientation or political affiliation.

IV    Office Bearers

• The affairs of the society shall be managed by a President, Vice-President, Honorary Secretary, Honorary Treasurer, Concert Organiser, Librarian and six Directors, all being members of the society, and five of whom shall form a quorum.
  
  
• The President will serve for a period of three years, thereafter being ineligible for re-election for a period of one year. The Vice-President will also serve for three years and then move up to the post of President. The offices of Honorary Secretary, Honorary Treasurer, Concert Organiser and Librarian will be for three-year terms, at the end of which they may submit themselves for re-election. Two Members of Committee will retire annually, and will not be eligible for re-election for one year. The office-bearers will have the power to fill any vacancy amongst the Committee, but the member so elected will only hold office for the period during which his predecessor would have held office.
  
  
• The office-bearers will be responsible for the management of the society and may make any by-laws or regulations for each session as circumstances may require - provided that they are in harmony with these rules. The choice of works for performance shall be decided by the Committee in consultation with the Musical Director. Any suggestions from members may be considered.

V     Annual General Meeting

• The Annual General Meeting of the society will be held as soon as possible after the close of each session. Twenty members shall form a quorum. The business of the meeting will be :-
  1. Approval of the minutes of the last meeting.
  2. Financial statement.
  3. Election of the following office-bearers:
     • Honorary President and Honorary Vice-President
     • President, Vice-President
     • Honorary Secretary, Honorary Treasurer, Concert Organiser, Librarian
     • Six Members of Committee.
  4. Election of Musical Director and Accompanist.
  5. Rates of Subscription.
  6. Other business.

VI    Property & Disposal

• The music and other property of the society will belong to those members of the society who shall have paid their subscriptions for the current session, and in the event of a dissolution of the society, the free property, after settling all obligations, shall be disposed of to (a) charitable organisation(s) or be used for charitable purposes for the benefit of the community, as may be determined at a General Meeting of members, of which five days' notice has been given.

VII   Changes to Constitution

• These rules can only be altered by the vote of a clear majority of the members of the society, or by a majority of two-thirds of those present at a General Meeting, of which five days' notice by circular has been given.
